    • Controls many important pathways in the brain
    • Simple flow - a desire (for sushi) leads to an initial peak in dopamine and then it troughs which leads to the person to want to move and achieve that desire.
      • it is the trough that makes a person want to move to get something
    • Then by achieving that desire we get the reward which fulfills the trough and brings the levels back to baseline if the rewards meets expectation
      • the reward prediction error in the brain can cause the dopamine to peak (if the reward is above expectation) and trough (if the reward is below expectation)
      • ==related is the study with children that showed if you unexpectedly rewarded children for doing something they already love doing, their internal reward contingent learning will adapt to the higher levels of dopamine from the unexpected reward and anticipate that each time such that when the reward is removed - they no longer want to do the thing they originally loved doing==
    • The holy grail of being internally motivated is to convince yourself the reward is the effort or friction of doing something
      • growth mindset - that you can't do something right now but with work you can get better
    • To overcome procrastination or feeling unmovtivated the key is to create a steeper dopamine trough so you can bounce back to baseline (or even higher baseline) to drive overall motivation
      • This requires you to do something that is harder than the current task you are procrastinating
      • Creating a short list of things you can do at any time is helpful for this
